About Our Italian Leather
We use Italian vegetable-tanned leather from Tuscany, sourced from tanneries that are part of the Pelle Vegetale Consortium—a collective dedicated to preserving one of Italy’s oldest and most respected leather-making traditions.
The Pelle Vegetale Difference
Leather bearing the Pelle Vegetale mark is tanned using traditional vegetal methods, a slow, natural process passed down for generations. Instead of synthetic chemicals, tannins extracted from tree bark, leaves, and roots are used to transform raw hides into leather that is both durable and alive with character.
This time-honored approach results in leather that feels structured yet supple, with a warmth and depth that can’t be replicated by modern shortcuts.
Naturally Dyed, Never Artificial
Our leather is dyed using natural pigments, allowing the hide’s grain and organic markings to remain visible. Each piece carries subtle variations in tone and texture—proof of its authenticity and individuality. No two journals are ever exactly alike.
A Patina That Tells Your Story
Vegetable-tanned leather is meant to age. With use, exposure to light, and time, the leather develops a rich, clean patina, deepening in color and softness. This evolution is not a flaw—it’s a feature. Your journal becomes more beautiful the more it’s handled, reflecting the moments and memories it holds.
Crafted with Intention
Once the leather arrives from Tuscany, each journal is carefully made in California, where attention to detail and slow craftsmanship guide every step. From cutting to stitching, we honor the material by letting its natural qualities lead the design.
This is leather chosen not for trends, but for longevity—meant to be used daily, treasured for years, and passed on with stories still inside.
